This device allows images to be taken throughout the small bowel to look for sources of bleeding that cannot be seen with standard Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy. No anaesthetic or hospital admission is necessary. The PillCam SB video capsule measures only 11 mm x 26 mm. It contains an imaging device and light-source on one-side and transmits images at a rate of 2 images per second generating more than 50,000 pictures over an 8-hour period.
How the Procedure Works
You fast from midnight the day before the procedure. The next morning at the doctors office you are prepped for the procedure. This includes attaching a data recorder to a belt around the your waist. You will be given a glass of water to help swallow the capsule.
You may resume daily activities after swallowing the video capsule. Clear Fluids can be taken after 2 hours, and normal diet can be resumed after 4 hours. After 8-hours you return to the doctors office to take off the device. The capsule passes naturally with a bowel movement - usually within 24 hours.
Your doctor then reviews the recorded video and makes a report.
